Young woman with mask, Henri SERRUR, 1844

Portrait of a young woman dressed as a shepherdess, holding a Columbine mask in her right hand.
Signed SERRUR in the middle right.
This is probably a costume worn by the young woman for a festival or carnival, hence the presence of the mask.
Henri Auguste César SERRUR, born in Lambesart on February 8, 1794, died in Lille on March 31, 1876, was a French painter. A student of JB Regnault at the Beaux Arts de Paris from 1837, he exhibited in Paris between 1819 and 1850. A history painter, he also painted portraits.
The work presented here was included in the exhibition organized in Amiens in 1844 by the Société des Amis des Arts du département de la Somme under the title "La Bergère; style Pompadour", catalog no. 271. An early example of the revival of interest in the 18th century, which would later reach its apogee under the Second Empire, at the instigation of Empress Eugénie.
