Nineteenth-century painting

In the nineteenth century, painting reflected a constantly evolving society. There was a rapid succession of many pictorial movements. Between 1800 and 1914, there were around twenty pictorial movements. However, the four principal movements were Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, and cubism. Pictorial art brought to light the taste for change, innovation, and singularity.

Painters were not striving for originality but rather to render a faithful reflection of a society undergoing a process of constant evolution thanks to technical and scientific progress in many fields. This revolution resulted in rapid developments on the thematic, technical, and stylistic levels.
