Romantic and realistic painter of townscapes and animated landscapes; draughtsman, engraver and watercolourist.
Yvon Vermeersch was a pupil of the Academy of Ghent under Pierre François De Noter (1824 - 1828) and then of Pierre Poelman. He had a preference for church and cityscapes, picturesque corners with figures and landscapes. He left Ghent around 1841 and undertook a series of study trips to Lorraine, Bavaria, the Rhineland, Tyrol, Italy and Sicily. He eventually settled in Munich.
He was under the patronage of Ludwig I, King of Bavaria, and enjoyed great success with his German and Italian landscapes. He continued to submit paintings to various Belgian Salons, such as that of Ghent in 1841 and that of Antwerp in 1849 and 1852.
He also sometimes signed J. or I. (Ivo) Vermeersch.
