Landscape with windmill

Henri Joseph Harpignies (1819-1916) was a painter, landscape artist, watercolourist and engraver.
He began his career at the age of 27, joining the studio of the painter Jean Achard, which he left for Flanders and Germany during the 1848 Revolution.
In the 1850s, Harpignies met Corot, who introduced him to the painters of the Barbizon School. Following in the footsteps of his elders, Corot, Daubigny and Rousseau, the painter entered into communion with the landscape, and his paintings became a reflection of this dialogue, although he soon became detached from their way of working.

Referred to by Antole France as the "Michelangelo of Trees", he is still recognised today as one of the masters of 19th-century landscape painting.
