A sardonyx cameo of Aurora and Cupid.

Italian, 19th century.

Measures 3.3 x 2.4 x 0.6cm.

The composition is after a marble relief by Bertel Thorvaldsen (Rome, c.1770-1844) which was subsequently reproduced predominantly in shell and lava cameos, sardonyx examples are rare to find.

Aurora was the Roman goddess of dawn and Cupid the god of love, their Greek counterparts were Eos and Eros.

A lava cameo of a similar composition can be found in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, USA, Accession Number: 65.268
