Virgin in embossed silver, Finistère, 16 th c.

Virgin in embossed and gilded silver from a Finistère processional cross, 16th century

This haloed Virgin was certainly part of a processional cross such as one finds in the Finistère area of Brittany, associating the Virgin and Saint John on branches on either side. others of Christ, as well as ornaments such as gadrooned balls, bells, and an architectural knot.
By her still Gothic style of drapery, our Virgin dates back however a little before the great tradition of Finistère Crosses which developed rather in the 17th century.

Accidents and lacks, oxydated silver, remains of gilding and engobe 16th century

Provenance: Brittany, art market
