Furniture and Works of Art from the 17th, 18th and early 19th century
If gilded bronze is widely used for clocks, andirons, sconces, two categories of furniture escape this use and are almost exclusively designed and made in gilded wood, they are mirrors and consoles.
This Louis XV period wall console is one of these exceptions and is an extraordinary commission in every sense of the word.
The sublime design of this tangle of acanthus leaves punctuated with flowers is equal to the remarkable subtlety of carving.
The use of gilded bronze, although extremely rare is known for some mirrors, we even have the description of two mirrors "cast and chiseled by Caffieri on the design of Gabriel" offered by Louis XV to Sultan Mahmoud I in 1742.
On the other hand, we have no equivalent for consoles in the Louis XV period, we had to wait for the Louis XVI period to see all bronze table bases appear, remaining exceptional in the production of furniture.
