Demoiselles d'Avignon en terre vernissée

A series of four anthropomorphic ewers in glazed terracotta with brown glaze, called "Demoiselles d'Avignon", circa 1840 They have a round belly and a slender neck provided with a pouring spout presenting a stylized animal head, either in large lip, or tube-shaped, which makes them name Demoiselle and Damoiseau. These ewers made in Canakkale, a small Turkish port located on the Dardanelles strait, were imported to France throughout the second half of the 19th century. Marseilles ships which transported goods to Turkey returned laden with Ottoman ceramics which the local bourgeoisie was fond of. some usual wear.
