Set of 12 tiles, Saint Michel, late 17th early 18th

The 12 tiles composing this piece are laid, not glued, on a wooden support.
Saint Michael is represented with a being half dragon half devil, incarnation of Satan.

Saint Michael has several facets.
Quoted in the book of Daniel, in the Bible, as the first of the princes and guardians of Israel.

In the New Testament, he is defined as an archangel.
In the Apocalypse, he is the one who leads the army of angels to fight the dragon, which he manages to defeat.

The Saint Michael in our work comes directly from this passage. It is the most represented iconography in art.

The wings are the first attribute of the angel, a classical iconography of the winged victory. The armor is the attribute of Saint Michael, because it indicates that he is at the head of the celestial troops. The foot crushing the demon is the sign of the victory won over him.
