Pair of terracotta putti, 17th century Florence

Pair of terracotta statues representing two children with large curls and dressed in a cloth tied at the waist. At the feet of each, there is a base, in the shape of a vase placed on lion claws. Considering the positions of the arms and the breaks, one can imagine that they were torches held by putti. Each statue rests on an oval base.
Since the Renaissance, Florence has been an important center of terracotta sculpture production. The wiggling posture (or contrapposto) inherited from Antiquity and the idealized naturalism of the children are typical of 17th and early 18th century statuary in Tuscany.

Breaks in the hands and attributes. Chips on the surface.

Size (H x D) : 96 x 34 cm
