In Japan, just like in China, the carp is associated with values such as longevity, perseverance, and marital fidelity. According to an ancient Chinese legend, the first carp to cross the tumultuous waters of the Yellow River and leap over the cascades of the Dragon Gate (Longmen) would transform into a dragon. This popular tale served as a metaphor for academic success, where the scholar who passed the imperial examinations would become a high-ranking official. This symbolism of the carp later spread to Japan, where it became a popular motif in decorative arts. Our pair of vases corresponds to its most iconic representation, showing it leaping vertically above the waves.
