Hercules overcoming a centaur
the door of this architectural cabinet, an epic episode portrayed by
Giambologna at the end of the 16th century (marble sculpture in Florence, Piazza della Signora). Following Giambologna, artists throughout Europe
Europe depicted the hand-to-hand combat in which Hercules prepares
the centaur Eurytion with his club.
This door opens onto a perspective theater behind a triple arcade
in red tortoiseshell.
